Preparation of luteolin (or its O-(hydroxyalkyl) derivatives) (I) involves reducing a flavonoid (II) containing a disaccharide residue, using sodium dithionite in aqueous alkaline medium. Some (I), i.e. the tris-O-(hydroxyalkyl) derivatives, are new compounds. Preparation of luteolin compounds of formula (I) involves reducing a flavonoid of formula (II) with sodium dithionite (Na2S2O4) in aqueous alkaline medium. R1-R3 = H or -(CH2)nOH; n = 2-8 (same or different in R1-R3). An Independent claim is included for (I; R1-R3 = -(CH2)nOH) as new compounds.
