A Kronecker product code structure for a synchronization word is presentedwhich permits the use of dual-mode sequential matchedfilter. This matched filter permits a large reduction in acquisition timesince the number of frequency bins that must be searched is greatlyreduced when there is a large frequency uncertainty. In the first mode ofoperation the output of a filter matched to the high rate code isnon-coherently integrated in a post-detection integrator to obtain reliablebut ambiguous acquisition of the synchronization word. In thesecond mode of operation the ambiguity is resolved.
