A recombinant microbial cell comprises at least one increased expressible enzyme activity controlling anabolic metabolism of ammonia in the cell and a reduced or eliminated expressible enzyme activity controlling anabolic metabolism of ammonia in the cell. The increased enzyme activity is a NADH-dependant activity catalyzing the reaction: 2-oxoglutarate + NH3 + NADH ® glutamate + NAD, 2-oxoglutarate + glutamine + NADH ® 2 glutamate + NADP, or 2-oxoglutarate + NH3 + ATP ® glutamine + ADP + Pi. The increased activity is that of an enzyme encoded by a nucleic acid coding sequence linked to an expression signal not natively associated with the nucleic acid coding sequence and is increased as compared to the expression of the enzyme activity when the nucleic acid coding sequence is associated with its native expression signal. The reduced or eliminated enzyme activity is a natively present NADPH-dependant glutamate dehydrogenase activity and is reduced compared to the native level of activity or eliminated. Preferably the increased expressible enzyme activity is provided by either glutamate synthase, glutamine synthase, or glutamate dehydrogenase from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Further described is the production of metabolites by cultivating the microbial cell wherein the metabolites may be ethanol and glycerol.
