The lid for closure of the open upper side of a crate comprises a lowermost peripheral horizontal edge which at least approximately connects to the upper-located innermost peripheral wall of a crate and an uppermost horizontal peripheral edge placeable on top of the upper open side of a crate and which extends over the outermost peripheral wall of a crate. The uppermost horizontal peripheral edge of the lid (1) is connected with the lowermost peripheral horizontal edge of the lid by a vertical peripheral wall on the inner periphery of these peripheral edges and a body plate extending between them. The lowermost horizontal peripheral edge (3) is lacking in the corners (2) and the distance between the lowermost horizontal peripheral edge and the uppermost horizontal peripheral edge (4) is not dependent upon the radius with which the innermost peripheral walls of a crate connect to each other, but is of adequate width and depth so that in the fully opened state of the lid it can grip over an upstanding side wall of a crate.
