The method for controlling the local operation of a mobile unit (MS) involves the mobile unit sending a request for location updating if it notes that its location area has changed. A mobile- station specific group of special cells is formed from selected network cells. The operation of the mobile station is controlled on the basis of the group. In order to control the operation of the mobile unit using the group of special cells, information on the special cells relating to the particular mobile unit is fetched from the group, and is transmitted to the mobile unit, where it is used.
