PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To profitably obtain powdery optically active methyl phenyllactate from an optically active methyl phenyllactate solution obtained by a reaction without concentrating and drying the optically active methyl phenyllactate solution, without producing gel-like crystals, and without causing a trouble on operation and a complicated problem.;SOLUTION: This powdery optically active methyl phenyllactate having a good quality is profitably obtained by [a crystallization method (1)] comprising crystallizing the optically active methyl phenyllactate in a solvent mixture of a saturated hydrocarbon with a compound except the saturated hydrocarbon and then subjecting the product to a solid-liquid separation treatment to obtain the crystals, [a crystallization method (2)] comprising crystallizing the optically active methyl phenyllactate in an alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent and then subjecting the product to a solid-liquid separation treatment to obtain the crystals, or [a crystallization method (3)] comprising dropping the melted product of the optically active methyl phenyllactate to an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent to crystallize the optically active methyl phenyllactate, and then subjecting the product to a solid-liquid separation treatment to obtain the crystals.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
