PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic disk apparatus capable of coping with a case that a resistance change rate of a magnetic head is decreased due to a secular change by optimizing an on-track determination level in a settling mode so as to enhance the throughput.;SOLUTION: The on-track determination apparatus and the track determination method of this invention are configured such that a position error being a difference between a target position by a read instruction and a current position is detected, one corresponding on-track determination level is selected in response to a magnetic head in use and a region of the magnetic disk at a target position, and using the selected on-track determination level determines whether or not the magnetic head resides in the on-track according to the position error.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
