A magma evacuation system for the prevention of explosion from volcanoes/supervolcanoes consists of a tube (10, 11) to allow controlled evacuation of the magma from the volcano. The tube (10, 11) penetrates the volcano and has means (21) for heating the magma to prevent the viscosity of the magma increasing as it moves upwards through the tube (10, 11). The stability of the magma stream is further enhanced by water cooling the inner region of the magma stream and by use of vortex generators (13) to keep the outer edges of the magma stream relatively hot. Once at the surface the magma may be piped (19) to a treatment plant and the heat from the magma can be used to power a steam driven generator turbine.
