Synthetic cornea for corneal prostheses, which is designed to be placed in a recess in the cornea which leaves intact the Descemet membrane and is anchored by its truncated conical shape. A synthetic cornea for placement into an recess made in the cornea which is made in front of and not behind the Descemet membrane. It is in a transparent flexible material and has a front face in the form of a portion of a sphere of radius Ra and a rear face in the form of a portion of a sphere of radius Rb separated by a distance 'e'. The sides give the form of a truncated cone and form an angle 'a' with the rear face. Angle 'a' is 10 to 35 degrees. The distance 'e' is 400-500 microns and angle 'a' is preferably 25-30 degrees. The diameter of the front face is 3-8mm and of the rear face 4.5- 9.5mm. Radius Rp is 6-8mm and radius Ra is 6.5-8.5mm. The front face is coated with a material favoring cellular proliferation and the rear face with a material inhibiting cellular proliferation. The cornea has a corolla in polychlorotrifluoroethylene fixed at one end to the wall of the cornea and free at the other. The cornea may also comprise an annular skirt 20-50 microns thick in the same or different material attached so that it is flush with the rear face.
