Production of a fabric includes cutting untreated sisal fibers into pieces 60 - 160 mm long and then bleaching and chemically extracting pecto-lignins that bind the fibrous material in the sisal. The fibrous material is wrung and dried to give a water content of 30 - 40% and then worked mechanically until it is homogeneous, particularly if other fibers have been added. The fibrous material is carded mechanically to form a sheet of thin flexible sisal fibers. An Independent claim is included for the following: (a) A composite material for automobiles includes a consolidated sheet of sisal fibers produced as above. Preferred Features: The chemical treatment is an alkaline process performed in a circulating bath or autoclave followed by a hot rinse, neutralization and a cold rinse. The bath has cylinders of 400 - 450 mm diameter thru which the sisal passes. For 40 kg of sisal a p(ump delivers 1400 - 1800 l/minute of treatment liquid. A hygroscopic agent and then a silicone additive are added to the dried material before it is homogenized. The silicone additive assists the carding. An anionic surfactant is also added to help the homogenization stage if the drying stage has been too long.
