The system to bar traffic on a road in one direction, but allow movement in the other direction, has a number of successive barrier plates (4-10) each on a swing axis (11) across the road surface (3). The leading plate (4) is virtually vertical at the road in the normal setting, and the other overlapping plates are at an angle to it, with butts (4b-10b) at the rear sides of each as laying surfaces for the leading ends of the neighboring plates, and stop an upwards or back swing movement when in the barrier direction (1). A spring system sets the assembly in the normal setting, to restore the barrier action after the plates have been flattened by a vehicle moving in the permitted direction (2).
