Fuel cell system comprises a fuel cell stack, a steam reformer for reforming an organic fuel and for producing hydrogen for consumption through the stack, and a reactor for splitting methanol and producing hydrogen and hot waste gas
Fuel cell system comprises a fuel cell stack structured to use hydrogen to produce electricity; a steam reformer for reforming an organic fuel and for producing hydrogen for consumption through the stack; and a methanol splitting reactor for splitting methanol and producing hydrogen and hot waste gas. The methanol splitting reactor is connected to the reformer to deliver hot waste gases from the reactor and pre-heat the reformer. The methanol splitting reactor is connected to the fuel cell stack to deliver hydrogen to the stack. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating a fuel cell system. Preferred Features: The system further comprises a burner connected to the splitting reactor to deliver heat to the reactor and drive a methanol splitting reaction in the reactor. The burner contains a catalyst for chemical combustion of a fuel, preferably methanol or gasoline. A splitting catalyst, preferably made from 10-20 wt.% palladium on a ZrO2, Pr2O3 or CeO2 support. The reformer contains a copper or zinc catalyst. The system also comprises a carbon monoxide adsorber (38) and a reactor (18) for carrying out selective oxidation.
