The postbox has a detector for monitoring the insertion of mail items, and indicating this via a signaling device (8). The detector is arranged in the region of the insertion slot of the postbox, and may be an electromechanical or electromagnetic switch operated by opening the post slot flap (4). Alternatively, a light barrier switch may be used. The signaling device may comprise audible and/or visual devices, such as LEDs (9).
