Objective, controlled life extension of prestressed and reinforced concrete bridges combines short- and long-term quantified observations to determine acceptable load bearing capacity
Objective, controlled life extension of prestressed and reinforced concrete bridges combines short- and long-term quantified observations to determine acceptable load bearing capacity
Short-term investigation and long term observations are so combined, that predominantly-subjective evaluations, especially concerning load bearing capacity, are now objectively-based, hence achieving a new quality of assessment. Measurements from short term investigations characterize the current loading/deformation behavior, if appropriate observing dependence on temperature and other influences, using statistical analysis to determine selected boundary values of the measured magnitudes. Exceeding limiting values over the short term or continuously, are taken as an objective sign of systematic, irreversible deterioration in load bearing behavior. For long term observation a suitable monitoring system is installed on the load bearing structure.
