The method involves transmitting a loop delay measurement signal from a first to a second node over a communications connection, receiving the signal at the second node and returning it to the first node with an embedded value of a turn-round delay time, receiving the signal at the first node and computing the propagation delay by measuring the overall delay time less the turn around time. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of compensating for different propagation delay times, a system for measuring propagation delays between a base station controller and a number of base stations, a system for measuring propagation delays between nodes in communications network, a system for computing relative propagation delays and a system for compensating different propagation delay times.
