Print apparatus (10) has an ink carrier cylinder (14), an arrangement for transfer of a sealed ink film onto the ink carrier and a radiation source for transmission of radiation (24) to the outer surface of the ink carrier with the radiation source (22) arranged so that the radiation is incident on the carrier outside the print gap. An independent claim is made for a method for application of a print image onto a printing roller in which only a local area of the ink film is heated just prior to a transfer location (28).
