Aqueous polymer dispersion, used for production of latex foam and foam articles e.g. carpet backing, contains styrene-butadiene rubber particles and reinforcing polymer with hard and soft phases based on the same monomers
Aqueous polymer dispersions containing (a) rubber particles and (b) reinforcing polymer particles. Component (a) is a copolymer of x wt% vinyl-aromatic monomer (VAr) and y wt% conjugated diene. Component (b) comprises a hard phase based on VAr with up to 10 wt.% diene and a soft phase based on VAr and diene in amounts which differ from x and y by not more than 3 wt.%. Aqueous polymer dispersions (I) containing (a) rubber particles and (b) reinforcing polymer particles. Component (a) is a copolymer of x wt% monovinyl-aromatic compound (VAr) and y wt% 4-9C conjugated aliphatic diene, (where x = 5-35; and y = 65-95). Component (b) comprises: (A) 50-90 wt.% hard polymer phase with a glass transition point (Tg) above 70 deg C based on 90-100 wt.% VAr and 0-10 wt.% diene as above; and (B) 10-50 wt% soft polymer phase based on the same monomers (VAr and diene) in amounts of x ! not more than 3 wt.% and y ! not more than 3 wt.% respectively. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method for the production of (I) by making components (a) and (b) in separate reactions by radical-initiated, aqueous emulsion polymerisation and then combining the two dispersions to form a homogeneous mixture; and (2) latex foam and molded foam articles made from (I).
