Production of chromium oxide ceramics and chromium oxide-containing ceramics comprises heating the ceramics in a combustion furnace using heat energy produced by combusting fuel with oxygen-enriched air or pure oxygen as oxidant and introduced by a burner; calcining in a reducing atmosphere; cooling; and removing from the furnace. Preferred Features: The oxidant is air containing at least 0.5 vol.% oxygen. The heat energy is continuously or discontinuously introduced into the heating zone and/or combustion zone of the furnace. The heat energy can be introduced in different amounts.
