The handle (1) for a valve or tap contains a sleeve (3) which fits over the valve spindle (14) when the handle is pressed down This can be locked in place by turning a cylindrical key (8) with a lug (6) which fits between collars (12, 17) on the sleeve, allowing the tap to be turned. When the handle is raised, it is disconnected from the spindle and is locked in place by positioning the lug under the lower collar.
