In a process for improving the deinkability of printed matter by adding additives before printing with gravure printing ink, the additive is an organophilic complex (I) of (a) a water-insoluble, hydrated, cation-exchangeable, film-forming, smectic foliated silicate with an ion exchange capacity of = 50 milliequivalent/100 g and (b), bound to this, an organic group derived from an onium ion compound. These are dissolved, in colloidal form, in an organic solvent and mixed with the gravure printing ink. An Independent claim is also included for paper or cardboard which has printed areas containing a fraction of a commercial gravure printing ink and a fraction of a colloidal solution of the reactive organophilic complex.
