Electrolysis of aqueous HCl solutions to give Cl2 is effected in a cell with a fluoro polymer-bonded membrane electrode unit between the cathode and anode chambers, the anode layer having as the electrocatalytically-active material a supported catalyst comprising (optionally graphitized) C black coated with a metal comprising (i) Pt, Ir, Ru, Pd, Os, Re, Rh or Au noble metal or Ti and/or Zr as a metal, and/or (ii) an alloy and/or oxide of such a metal.
