The method involves a central station allocating tracks to trains by wireless paths. Each region of track to be traveled is described by a polygon (SP1) containing the train (Z) location and its destination (ZP1) within the region. The train constructs a location space (AR) about the position determined by itself using a confidence interval and stopping distance and commences braking when its location space intersects or lies outside the polygon. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for controlling a train that determines its own position in a track network.
