The pneumatic apparatus to break the fall of a person, jumping from a burning building, has a landing surface (28) of a shear-resistant netting material. It has a shaping rib structure of inflatable and flexible tubes (20-24) to support the landing surface and form the support surface (46) on the ground. The ribs have supports (32) to prevent tilting on uneven ground and when the falling body lands on the apparatus. The structure has chambers which are filled with a fluid e.g. water at the deployment site.
