The web drying station (10), at a machine for the prodn. of a paper or cardboard web (12), has an especially large suction pick-up roller (20) between the final press nip (14) of the water-extraction press section (16) and the following blower drying unit (18). The drying unit (18) is between the final press nip (14) of the press section (16) of the machine and the first multiple cylinder group (40), with a one-piece hood (28) and a further drying unit with a multiple-piece and pref. two-part hood. The drying units (18) are set to raise the dry material content of the web to 55-65%. The drying units (18) have a preceding or integrated infra red heater. With a machine speed where the web travels at 70-120 m/sec. and pref. 80-100 m/sec., the drying units (18) are operated at a temp. of 250-450 deg C and pref. 250-350 deg C. The hoods (28) have jet holes with a dia. of 10 mm and/or suction slits with an open jet surface of 1.5-3.5% pref. covered by hole diaphragms against clogging. A sensor to register a web break is before and/or after the drying units (18) or between them.
