PURPOSE: A method for manufacturing austenitic 316 stainless steel wire rod with excellent surface roughness is provided, which is characterized in that 316 stainless steel wire rod has enough surface roughness to be applied as materials for wire rope, bolt and mesh even though solid solution treatment is performed after 316 stainless steel wire rod is wire-rolled. CONSTITUTION: The method includes the steps of heating a billet comprising 0.08 wt.% or less of C, 0.08 wt.% or less of N, 1.0 wt.% or less of Si, 2.0 wt.% or less of Mn, Cr 16 to 18 wt.%, Ni 10 to 14 wt.%, Mo 2 to 3 wt.%, balance Fe and incidental impurities at a temperature elevation rate of 10 to 12C/min to above 1100C; holding the temperature for 150 to 200 minutes; hot rolling; winding the hot wire rod at 1000 to 1020C; and cooling it at a rate of 8C/sec or more; and solid solution treatment.
