PURPOSE: An evaluation method of semi-soft coking coal is provided which secures reliability by accurately evaluating quality of the semi-soft coking coal and evaluating a large amount of semi-soft coking coal under the conditions actually similar to the conditions inside a furnace of COREX using the semi-soft coking coal. CONSTITUTION: In a method for evaluating characteristics of coal using a TG (thermogravimetry) comprising a reaction pipe(21) equipped with a heating means(22) heating samples, a weight measuring means(23) installed on the upper part of the reaction pipe so as to measure weights of samples and a gas supply means(24) for supplying gas from the lower part of the reaction pipe, the method for evaluating quality of coal comprises the steps of charring the coal by injecting nitrogen gas into the reaction pipe and charging dried coal samples having a size of at least 5 mm or more into the reaction pipe after maintaining a temperature of the reaction pipe to a certain temperature by heating the reaction pipe; measuring weight variations of coal generated while the coal is being reacted with the CO2 gas by injecting CO2 gas into the charred coal with nitrogen gas substituted, and obtaining a half life which is a time taken for a weight of fixed carbon content in the measured coal to become a half of the weight of fixed carbon content in the initial coal; obtaining a half life in which a weight of coke reduced to half in the same method as the foregoing method; and judging that the more closer to 1 the obtained index is the better quality of coal is after indexing the half life by dividing the obtained half life of the coal sample by a half life of coke.
