Non-linear optically (NLO) active copolymers with NLO chromophore units attached to some of the hydroxyl groups of a N-(p-hydroxy-phenyl)-substituted maleimide/olefin copolymer. Non-linear optically active (NLO) copolymers are of formula (1). R1, R2 = H, CH3 or halogen; U = linear or branched 1-20C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, a bi- or tri-cyclic alkyl group with up to 18 carbon atoms, aryl, heteroaryl or a silane group of formula -(CH2)n-SiR'RR''; n = 1-5; R', R, R'' = 1-5C alkyl; V = a linear or branched 2-20C hydrocarbon chain in which 1 or more non-adjacent CH2 groups (except for the CH2 attached to W) may be replaced by O, S or NR3; R3 = H or 1-6C alkyl; W = non-linear optically active group; and (m:n) = (5-95):(95:5). Independent claims are also included for (a) NLO polymer materials obtained by reacting NLO copolymer(s) containing crosslinkable free hydroxyl groups (1) with functionalized crosslinker(s) in amounts of 1 g-equiv. (1) to 1/n g-equiv. n-functional crosslinker; and (b) electro-optical and photonic components with at least one functional layer of crosslinked NLO polymer as above on a substrate material.
