The present invention provides a substantially purified growth differentiationfactor (GDF) receptor,including a GDF-8 (myostatin) receptor, as well as functional peptide portionsthereof. In addition, theinvention provides a virtual representation of a GDF receptor or a functionalpeptide portion thereof. Thepresent invention also provides a method of modulating an effect of myostatinon a cell by contacting thecell with an agent that affects myostatin signal transduction in the cell. Inaddition, the invention providesa method of ameliorating the severity of a pathologic condition, which ischaracterized, at least in part, byan abnormal amount, development or metabolic activity of muscle or adiposetissue in a subject, bymodulating myostatin signal transduction in a muscle cell or an adipose tissuecell in the subject. Theinvention also provides a method of modulating the growth of muscle tissue oradipose tissue in aeukaryotic organism by administering an agent that affects myostatin signaltransduction to the organism.
