A computer-modeled surface may be an abstract or real surface, and a datarepresentation of the abstract or real surface is used within the computersystem as a surface model. In one aspect of the present invention computer-modeled material is distributed over the computer-modeled surface. A coatedsurface model is produced incorporating the distributed computer-modeledmaterial. The surface model is divided into a plurality of regions. An amountof computer-modeled material to distribute to each region is determined byemitting particles from launch sites associated with the regions. Elevations which are high with respect to adjacent elevationsresult in a quantity of the material being moved from one region to anotherregion.Thus, computer-modeled material is distributed and re-distributed over acomputer-modeled surface.
