Vaccine (A) for protecting animals against infection by Leishmania species comprises the P36 protein of L. infantum, or its immunogenic fragment, optionally formulated with one or more adjuvants and/or vehicles, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) vaccine comprising a DNA expression system (ES) containing a DNA fragment that encodes, and expresses, P36 or its fragment, optionally formulated with one or more adjuvants and/or vehicles; and (2) ES that: (a) is not Escherichia coli; or (b) includes a DNA sequences encoding a co-stimulatory molecule (I) able to promote a Th1-type cellular immune response.
