The invention relates to an apparatus for series/parallel conversion of the winding element systems 3 and 4 of a three-phase machine such that, for motor operation or when the three-phase machine is consuming power, the winding systems are connected in series and, for generator operation and when the three-phase machine is emitting power, they are connected in parallel via three- phase pulse-controlled rectifiers 1 and 2 to an electrical store 5. The change between series connection and parallel connection takes place automatically, without any explicit control signals, when a direction change occurs in the power flow or current flow, which is determined by the control of the three-phase machine. When the three-phase machine is consuming power, the coupling diode 31 is forward-biased based on the current flow direction which then occurs, and the parallel diodes 32 and 33 remain reverse-biased. In order to emit power from the three-phase machine, current is passed via the parallel diodes 32 and 33 into the electrical store 5 and the voltage of the electrical store 5 appears as a reverse voltage on the series diode 31. Associated bridge arms of the pulse-control converters 1 and 2 are controlled identically. In order to avoid a change in the type of interconnection (series or parallel connection), which is governed by the direction of the power flow of the pulse-controlled rectifiers 1 and 2 by pulse- frequency alternating components of the pulse-controlled rectified output currents, capacitors 34 and 35 are advantageously provided for dynamic voltage support on the output side of the pulse-controlled rectifiers 1 and 2.
