Railcar truck bolster for supporting a railway freight car is a cast steel hollow box structure with side bearing ribs and lightener openings located and shaped to decrease stresses and resulting fatigue cracks at the opening corners
The bolster comprises two side walls (18) extending downwardly from a top member and joined to a bottom member. Pairs of side bearing ribs (94) with bottom lightener openings (98) extend between the top and bottom members. Around each opening the side bearing rib top section has a generally uniform height, whereas the rib bottom section (121) has a greater height at the laterally inboard end of the opening than at the outboard end.
