PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stopping method and a stopping-retaining method for a fuel cell capable of improving durability. SOLUTION: This stopping method for the fuel cell carries out an oxygen consuming process consuming oxygen in an oxygen electrode by generating power by the cell with the feeding of an oxygen containing gas to the oxygen electrode stopped when the fuel cell is stopped. This stopping-retaining method for the fuel cell carries out the oxygen consuming process consuming oxygen in the oxygen electrode by generating power by the cell with the feeding of the oxygen containing gas to the oxygen electrode stopped when the fuel cell is stopped, and thereafter carries out a purge process for keeping a purging gas present in the oxygen electrode.
