PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press section structure considerably compact especially in the mechanical direction. ;SOLUTION: This press section for a paper machine employing at least two press nips NP1, NP2 and N3. Of these nips, at least the first nip is an extended nip NP1 or a nip extended at least in some extent. The last nip N2; NP2; N3 in the press section is placed on a level higher than the preceding nip NP1; NP2. The first nip NP1 and/or, when more than two nips are employed, the nip that immediately precedes the last nip is/are provided with two press fabrics 16 and 17; 27 and 28 that receive water. The paper web W is transferred on the lower fabric of the two press fabrics onto an upper fabric 38 of the last nip NP2, N3. After the web transfer point, the upper fabric 38 of the last nip NP2, N3 has a relatively short upwardly inclined run.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
