A method for measuring the cloud point of a specimen, in which a high-precision cloud point measuring instrument comprising a waveguide sensor of a totally reflecting type connected to input and output light optical fibers, and means for cooling/heating the sensor in contact with the means within a given range of temperatures is brought into contact with a specimen to cool/heat the specimen, and determine the cloud point of the specimen by measuring the temperature of the specimen when the total reflection occurs as the cloud point. The sensor has on its base a waveguide having input and output paths intersecting each other on the detecting surface which is in contact with the objective liquid. The input optical fiber is connected to the entrance of the input path in order to input light into the input path, while the output optical fiber is connected to the exit of the output path in order to receive totally reflected light. Alternatively, formed is a waveguide comprising input and output parts adjacent to the detecting surface, and an input path which intersects the input part and a plurality of output parts which intersect the reflecting part. Then the input optical fiber is connected to the entrance of the input path, and a plurality of output optical fibers are connected to the exits of the output parts, respectively. The cooling/heating means is preferably a Peltier element which is arranged on a heat sink.
