The process comprises creating a heterogeneous weld (12) and applying a thick layer (14) of a nickel-based alloy to the inner surfaces of both pipe ends, extending axially along them, by means of a build-up weld. The thick layer covers the inner surface of the weld (12), protecting the bi-metallic joint between the two tubes.
