The gas generator (1) consists of a hollow body with an aperture (4) and inflation ports (9) containing a solid pyrotechnic charge (25) and an igniter (26) supported by a closure ring (27). The closure ring has at least one outlet (42) connecting the inside of the generator to the outside and closed by a shutter (43) which resists a critical pressure between nominal and limiting pressures and is made from a material which melts at a temperature below that at which the charge self-ignites.
