A liquid crystal composition contains a first component and a second component selected from two specified compounds. A liquid crystal composition contains at least one compound of the compounds of formula (I) as the first component and at least one compound from compounds of formulas (II) and (III) as the second component. R1, R3, R5 = 1-10C alkyl or 2-10C alkenyl; R2, R4, R6 = 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy or 2-10C alkenyl; Z1-Z5 = single bond or -CH2CH2-; A1, A2 = 1,4-phenylene or trans-1,4- cyclohexylene, and when A2 is 1,4-phenylene, at least one H on the ring optionally substituted by F. An Independent claim is also included for liquid crystal display devices using the liquid crystal compositions.
