The method for generating steam from the exhaust gases from a ship's engine comprises feeding part of the gases through a bundle of tubes (2) and the remainder through a central by-pass (3). The cross-section of flow of this can be varied by a control valve (5) and the gases are recombined on exit from the tubes. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the process.
