A customer no longer places his letter or card in a letter box, but instead has it sent via an automatic scanner to the destination mail centre. The automatic scanners are distributed in residential areas in much the same way that letter boxes are today. A hard copy of the document is generated at the destination mail centre and is automatically put in an envelope and immediately placed in the postal distribution network.
