The method involves determining whether a signal is a change up signal, determining whether the driving conditions fulfil learning conditions for changing up with the engine switched on if the input change signal is a signal for changing up with the engine on, performing a change up with the engine on if the learning conditions for this are fulfilled, learning an initial fill time and then changing, determining whether the change has completed, determining whether run-up occurs during a shift if the change has finished, determining whether locking has occurred if run-up has not occurred, determining whether locking is above defined level when it has occurred and learning a fill time if the locking is above the level.
