The permanent magnet assembly (15) (PM) and pole piece conducting magnetic flux to the plunger (20) are located with respect to yoke (12) and plunger. Thus the plunger can adopt a first position within the influence of the PM and pole piece, and a second position at least partially within the influence of the pole piece. In the first position, fluxes from the coil (13) and the PM, the latter flux at least partially, run through the plunger (20). In the second position, flux from the PM runs through yoke, plunger and PM itself.
