The signal processor has a maximum likelihood decoder (10) that determines the likelihood of the state transition corresponding to sampled level based on the likelihood function of the state transitions defined with the equalization characteristic showing a certain probability. The signal processor also has an equalizer (3) that processes a reading signal in predetermined equalization characteristic. A sampling device processes the level of the equalized signal for every predetermined sampling time. An Independent claim is also included for the signal processing.
