The operating mechanism to set the position of a vehicle seat has a hand lever (4) with two carriers (8,9), where one carrier (8,9) is in a direct engagement with the step gearing (10) on an axis (7). The other carrier (9,8) is linked to a further carrier (6), by a torque coupling, which is on a second axis (30) parallel to the first axis (7) and with a gap between them for a further step gearing (11). The two step gearings have a transmission link between them. The hand lever (4) is used selectively to give a torque coupling with one of the carriers (8,9).
