A fuel pump for a vehicle has a modular design with a housing (136) that contains the fuel pump and the electric motor, as well as a reservoir for the inlet fuel. The pumping module includes also an inlet pumping system that pulls fuel into the reservoir and a non return valve that prevents backflow of fuel into the tank. The output of the pump is taken to the engine, and with a dump duct to return excess fuel to the fuel tank. The electric motor is cooled by fuel leaking into the motor housing and returning to the fuel tank via a drain. The pumping module can be adapted to suit different engines/vehicles using a universal fitting.
