The apparatus comprises a tractor trailer with height adjustable main digging share (3) and a reel (6) for holding the foil roll. A controllable slitting blade (7a, 7b) cuts the foil strip intermittently as it moves past and over the main share. Once slit the foil is drawn and opened out through a pair of common mounted clamping rollers (5a, 5b). A pair of side shares (4a, 4b) refills the plant trench opened by the main share. A pair of contact pressure rollers (10) and associated clamping rollers (10a) guide and press back the foil edges into the side trenches and a pair of compacting rollers (12,12a) presses down the earth over the entrenched foil edges.
