Process for oil salvage from oil-contaminated water comprises preparing a number of floating sacks (8) filled with water-resistant chips; throwing the sacks onto the surface of the contaminated water and leaving the sacks to float on the surface of the contaminated water until oil collects in the periphery; collecting up the sacks using a net (3); lifting the sacks onto a salvage ship; and emptying into a collecting vessel. An independent claim is also included for a salvage ship for carrying out the salvage operation.
