Phenanthrene-2,7-diyl or 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,7-diyl compounds are new, with the compound 2-fluoro-7-methoxyphenanthrene being excluded. Phenanthrene-2,7-diyl or 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,7-diyl compounds of formula R1-A- Z1 (I) are new, with the compound 2-fluoro-7-methoxyphenanthrene being excluded. R1 = 1-8C alkyl or 2-8C alkenyl, with one non-terminal -CH2- group optionally replaced by -O- or -C(O)O- and/or one or more H optionally replaced by F; A = phenanthrene-2,7-diyl or 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,7-diyl; Z1 = F, OCHxF3-x, OC2HzF5-z, C2HzF5-z, CH=CF2 or Cl; x = 0, 1 or 2; and z = 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4.
