Device for controlling the air-fuel ratio in an I.C. engine (1) comprises a NOx catalyst (13b) arranged in an exhaust gas feed (14) of the engine; an estimator for estimating the amount of NOx exhaust gas released from the engine; an air-fuel ratio controller for controlling the air-fuel ratio based on the estimated NOx exhaust gas amount; and an estimator for estimating the concentration of the released NOx based on a value depending on the air-fuel ratio or a value depending on the exhaust gas feed amount and a value depending on the ignition point. Preferred Features: The NOx concentration estimator calculates the estimated value of the NOx concentration based on the value depending on the air-fuel ratio, the exhaust gas feed amount and the ignition point.
