The method involves specifying frequency-dependent reference values in the time domain corresponding to a predetermined standard for assessing the illumination. A frequency path assessment is conducted on at least one time signal of the three orthogonal spatial components of an electrical or magnetic field. The current time signal is convoluted with a pulse response of a frequency-dependent transfer function, whose magnitude is the inverse of the frequency-dependent reference value of the electric field strength or magnetic flux density. The resulting signals are squared and summed to determine the square of the peak and/or effective values, weighting the result, selecting the larger value and forming the square root. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the method.
